One Room Challenge -- Week #4

Good morning!  Welcome to week four of the One Room Challenge!  If this is your first time here, there are 20 of us that have six weeks to finish a room and share the entire process with you.  The good.  The bad.  And the ugly.

This is where we started...

The new king size bed and new carpet made a huge improvement!  But the nightstands had to go.  They're too small and didn't fit the overall vibe we were going for.

I went to see Julie, to see if she had anything perfect in stock.  She didn't, but mentioned a carpenter she knew.  So we talked and I drew for her what I wanted.  Then, after I went to Carrie's house and measured again (measure twice, cut once) I realized I wanted them wider than I originally thought.  Julie drew an updated, more precise version for the builder.  And we were on our way to nightstand heaven!

It's difficult to imagine them finished from this photo, but I knew once Julie lacquered them (she does not spray paint them) and finished them off, they would be amazing!

They are perfect! Thank you to Julie for gifting us the vintage brass pulls.

They look large in these photos, right? These were taken in Julie's workroom.  But once I got them installed in Carrie's master bedroom, they were ideal!  They are the perfect height --equal with the mattress.  And the width doesn't get swallowed up by the heavy bed or large room.

This is Carrie and me after the nightstands were installed and the glass tops were added...

Frolicking with joy.
I'm pretty sure a chorus broke out from heaven.
I even got an impromptu hug and a "I can't believe these are my nightstands."  Who knew a nightstand could be so rewarding?  Obviously now I want to make more...
MORE CUSTOM FURNITURE FOR EVERYONE. ;-)

If you're looking for unique, vintage pieces, or just in need of giving an old piece a new look, contact Julie at Simple Redesign.  She has both painted furniture and unfinished pieces to choose from.  For example, this is my client's dining room.  Same house as the master bedroom for the ORC.  We picked the mid-century modern buffet, unfinished, and Julie lacquered it for us.  Then the chairs were a Craig's List find of mine, and I had Julie spray them white and my upholsterer add black faux ostrich to the seats.

Onto the Q & A portion of this series.  If you're just jumping in now, every week I've been asking my clients a few questions to pull them into the process and help give you the inside scoop.  Last week they switched the questions on me!

You're going to think I paid her for these answers.  I didn't.  But she sure is generous. ;-)

1.  What has been the biggest surprise/unexpected aspect of this One Room Challenge process?
I have been thinking about this one for awhile and the truth is, I am not sure anything has surprised me.  (At least not yet!)  You created a design plan that exceeded my expectations - no surprise there!  You managed to find the perfect pieces and those extra elements that will make the finished room unique.  Again, I am not surprised!  When you could not find nightstands that fit our needs, you went see Julie at Simple Redesign and the two of you created the perfect nightstands for my room. No surprise!  You have worked quickly and efficiently to make sure the room is complete in six weeks.  Most importantly, you have made this process fun and exciting, eliminating any of the usual stress I feel when making big decisions.  I think you have really outdone yourself with this ORC, but again, I am not surprised!!

2.  At this point we've worked together designing most of your home.  What is one thing you would tell someone who is considering working with a designer?
My advice is to keep an open mind and allow yourself to consider design elements that may be outside your comfort zone.  I think many people can design "safely," but I personally hired a designer to push me beyond that safe zone.  Some of the design elements I had reservations about initially, are now my favorite components the spaces Abby designed.

Thanks, Carrie!  This has been so much fun and I think it's just going to get better from here!
-Chandelier is installed
-Custom window treatments arrive this week
-Monogrammed pillow on its way
-Art for gallery wall arrives tomorrow

Install day will be here before we know it!

Now grab more coffee and be sure to check out the other challengers!
