"Retro Knox" Designed | Family Room & Sources

Welcome back to my weekly series, Retro Knox Designed, where I take one piece from my favorite store, Retro Knox, and design a room around this piece.  Although his pieces are all vintage/antique/mid-century style, I want you to see that you don't need a mid-century home, or a super
glam room to mix these pieces in with what you already have.
Let's stop saying "I'll take it all." from the furniture showroom floor, and let's start building a room that's original to you and your family.  That speaks to your story.
That's collected.

When I share a design plan for a client, I'm not able to share all of the sources with you.  But with this series, because you are the client, you get every source! ;-)  Just click on the photo to click through to the item.
This post does contain a few affiliate links but most sources are not.

Today's room is based on this vintage Paul McCobb credenza with both wood and metal finishes.  I would use this in a living room, home office, or dining room.  But for today, let's use it under your flat screen.  The asking price is $1150 and if you look at McCobb pieces on 1stdibs you will quickly discover that this is an amazing price.  This piece will go quickly!  Just be sure to mention Abby M. Interiors for your 10% off. ;-)

Let's build a room around this piece.

I started with original art.  Someone needs to snag this ASAP because it's large, original, and affordable.
"In the Castle", 38x38,

A comfortable sofa in velvet...always a win.

A soft, durable rug with some pattern...

This coffee table is a great size to fit in the nook of the sectional.

A few pillows to brighten up the space, that bring out the colors in the painting.

Lighting is important.  An interesting floor lamp,

coordinates well with the wood on the side table.

But let's add more light flanking the painting with these sconces.

And art...glorious art for behind the TV.  Yes, you can allow your TV to cover a small portion of the art.  It's a layered, more sophisticated way to go.  It's all about balance.

Put the whole room together and it's a happy, stylish space with a mix of retro and modern.  Perfect for a young couple downtown or a family with kids.  Good design is flexible.  And investment pieces, like a classic McCobb, will never go out of style.

What do you think of this family room?  Does this give you a better idea of how you might incorporate a vintage piece into your home?  I'd love to hear from you.
