living room before and after: painted PB table

Our coffee table has a fresh new look with paint and a little gold leaf.  Here is the million picture photo tour.
Editor's Note: I've made some major changes since this post was published.  Click here to see the new look.

Here's the ad from Pottery Barn Kids.  Notice they show the Activity Table in a playroom, and not as a coffee table.  But I'm here to tell you that after five years, nothing
has gotten more use from our boys.

Restoration Hardware has a bit cooler version.

But I'm happy with our teal & gold version. :-)

When we first bought the house, our living room looked like this.
We had added the lighting, but nothing else.

Color, lighting, and fabric has transformed everything.  But we still have a long way to go.

I mixed Bermuda Turquoise and Calypso Blue (both by Benjamin Moore) to get
the perfect shade for our table.

Just ignore the color of my desk.  It's probably going white very soon.

This view is from our entryway with a peek at the wood shim mirror.

Krylon makes the gold leaf pen that I used to paint the frames of the chalkboard fronts.  Nothing is safe from gold, now that I've discovered these pens.  You can find them at JoAnn's Fabrics.

Our living room is still a work in progress.  I'm not pretending it's done.  But painting our coffee table has changed the entire vibe of the room. Our house feels happier; less serious and hopefully more stylish.
What do you think of the table in teal?

I'm hosting Easter dinner this weekend and I still haven't planned the menu or bought the food.  This may be a slight problem.  :-)  Wishing you all a beautiful weekend, remembering the joy and celebration of Easter!

  1. No way- you did it! You work fast! It looks incredible! WOW! I love how this room has evolved. And the gold leaf looks amazing too! Might have to try that one out. I also have some furniture painting projects on my mind, and this has definitely given me some inspiration. happy weekend! :)

  2. I love it, Abby! This was definitely a risk that paid off. You did a great job. Happy Easter to you and your family!

  3. Looks so new and fresh! Love the color.

  4. It looks amazing! Crazy what a fresh coat of paint can do to bring something to life. It did totally change the feel of the room and make it more vibrant! Happy Easter and good luck with the dinner. I know you'll pull it off in style(:

  5. I really like it a lot Abby! It sure does bring some brightness and sophistication to the space!

  6. It looks wonderful! Love the colours. Thanks for sharing!

  7. A little paint goes a long way. Love the color and the touch of gold!

  8. I love it! It turned out amazing! It really does make the room so cheerful as you described. Wish I could see it in person! Nice work!

  9. Nice work! The important part is that it is still completely functional for you and your family and now it looks pretty too. We have been coffee table-less for a while and I'm ready to have it back again. Hope you have a great weekend!

  10. Love the teal!!! And really...what is more important painting the coffee table...blogging about it....or planning Easter dinner for family? Don't answer that.....

  11. Beautiful! Is the top glass or acrylic?

  12. It really does give a completely different feel to the room! And gold leaf pens??? Sign me up! I definitely need those babies in my life!

  13. Sorry to be so late to this post! It looks fantastic. Your vision is always right on -- you totally own your style :) Have a Happy Easter, and of course you did all this before shopping!

  14. I love it, especially the golden touches.

  15. The table looks gorgeous!! I'm still obssessed with my armoire painted a similar color, so i think that shde doesnt get old. And the wood shim mirror looks fab in the hall!!!

  16. the table looks awesome! Way to go!!! The blue is gorgeous:)

  17. It's coming together, Abby! Looking good, and I can't beat the common sense of using the PB table as a coffee table. Kids spread out and take over a house, can't be helped - but you're proof the house can coexist - beautifully - with little ones!

  18. looks so amazing!!! would love for you to enter my giveaway!

  19. The peacock color is perfect! I love the dark contrast to the yellow couch! Perfect color!

  20. beautiful! I love that your home is about the people that live in it, Abby, not about reproducing and aesthetic.

  21. The updated coffee table looks amazing with the new paint! I love it when I see the practicality of how a real family lives but you have made it looked it chic. :)

  22. I came over from Better After and I LOVE this room! I want a table like that for my living room (not playroom... it wouldn't fit!) but my husband thinks I'm crazy. But I have a table at my grandmother's house that she wants to get rid of, so although it's not the same, it's free and large (with hidden stools underneath instead of containers). Anyway, enough babbling.. great redo! Now I'm off to check out the rest of your blog!
