my work on HGTV tonight

Good morning!  I missed you yesterday!  I got hit with a bug and honestly didn't get anything done.  But today is an exciting day!  My e-design clients, Colleen and Rick, will be on HGTV's House Hunters tonight at 10:00 p.m.!  The good news is that it's going to be so fun to watch them on TV and see the transformation of their home.  The bad news is that we only had 4 weeks to do construction and get the house ready for the camera crews.  Long story short, the room you'll see on TV tonight isn't anywhere close to the finished product.

I'd like to share with you how the room really looks today!  First, let's see where we started, including some pictures from the listing.

The bar area of the kitchen is open to the living room, and they had this ugly carpet meet this tile, which took up part of the living room. Not any more!
This photo was from the listing.  Anyone think it looks staged?  What you can't really tell in these pictures is that some of the walls had cheap paneling.  Notice the thin, ugly base boards.  Notice that there is one ugly light for this very long room.  Colleen and Rick wanted more seating so we also needed a totally new floor plan.
Bring on the demo!
New walls, ceiling, trim, and floors were installed.

They were e-design clients; I don't live in their town so the design work is done virtually.  They had a plan for next steps and and overall vision for the room.
The teal ottoman was key to the design, but you won't see that on House Hunters. Like I said, we only had four weeks and a custom velvet ottoman take longer than that.

Here's how the room looks now.  Please understand it's still not finished.
STILL TO BE DONE:
-adding a rustic wood mantle to the fireplace
-enlarging a photo of Colleen's wedding bouquet as art on the fireplace
-a white snakeskin tray is coming for the top of the ottoman
-a new pillow was purchased for one of the chairs

Let's take a look!  They did a great job of executing the vision of my design.  I wish they lived closer so I could actually go over there for pictures, but I think you'll agree they did just great on their own!

Yes, the ottoman looks royal blue in all of the photos, but Colleen swear that it is in fact teal. :-)

I love this painting!

See, that chair still needs the pillow and wouldn't you love to see the tray on the ottoman to hold remotes, a bud vase, and a few books?

They asked or a relaxing, airy space that still felt
comfortable and fit their budget.

What do you think?

Colleen was so sweet to send me this quote for my clients page:
We absolutely adore our new living room that Abby designed!  She was able to create the perfect new living space for our brand new house.  It has all of the elements we hoped for: cozy, relaxing, practical AND stylish!  (Not to mention all on our budget!)  As a newly married couple this space will certainly grow with us.  Abby was always just a text or phone call away.  She was there to help us put her plan into action.  She was able to determine what we needed and wanted when we were quite often clueless.  Abby simply knew our style better than we did!  She has an expert ability and talent to design the perfect space that will leave you wanting her to design every room in your house!
--Colleen & Rick

Thank you for such a generous quote!  It was such a treat to work with them.  We're actually starting on their master bedroom next.

I'll be back tomorrow to share the recap from the show.  I'll tell you what was real and what was totally fake!  Also, they were kind enough to refer me to their beautiful Realtor.  You can see my designs for her house here and here.  Insider tip: they actually like their Realtor, but House Hunters will try to make you believe otherwise.  :-)

  4. I was hoping you'd remind us again when this was going to air. I looked this weekend through several days worth of HGTV on my DVR but I couldn't find it. I can't wait to see it tonight...or tomorrow since it's past my bedtime (:

I love the print too. Did they already own that or did you find it online?

  12. Looks like you did a great job! It certainly looks better than the before. Paneling is a pain - I know because my parent's house had it everywhere! Hopefully you'll post more photos when it all comes together!
