my coral & gray guest room

Our guest bedroom has a new look.  I was going to wait until we had the 70's intercom removed, and had the walls and ceiling fixed, but I just couldn't stand walking by the room for another day.

At first I was planning on an all white room.  I even found a gallon of semi-gloss white in our basement.  {Free is fun!}  The wood headboard was from my grandmother and just waiting to be painted.  I already had the bedding and all the pillows but they were in other rooms.  I went back and forth on painting the walls/ceiling coral or painting the headboard coral.
I'm really happy with my choice.

I put the desk in my son's closet and it was a perfect fit.  I'm starting from scratch in here.  I still need side tables, lighting, art, and window treatments.  But I'm looking forward to letting the room evolve over time.

Here's how it looked before I started.
I read recently that you should never put "before" pictures on your blog because they're always ugly.  What do you think of that?  Do you like to see the before shots?

The colors used were Coral Rock 032, Decorators White CC-20, and Amherst Gray HC-167; all by Benjamin Moore.

What do you think?  Anyone ready to add some coral to their home?
People will either love the room or hate it, but I hope it's
a charming space for guests.

  1. We just painted the girls' ceiling a pink/coral and I used a light gray on the walls. I'm loving the white you used. Looks so good!

  2. I love the coral with the slate gray. And I adore that pillow with the light blue contrast!

Who doesn't love a good before and after shot?! The before is totally crucial to fully appreciating the new space!

  3. Looks like a great place for guests....cozy and comfortable!

And actually, it drives me nuts when people DON'T post the "before" pictures. I would much rather see how the project evolved rather than a bunch of pretty pictures :)

  5. I love color and I love the new look of this room. The pillow that pulls in the coral is great. It's such a great feeling being able to shop the house and pull things together to work in a different way. I like seeing "before" photos because it shows the evolution of the room and how far it's come.

  8. Great color for the bedroom! And I love that it's just at the top so it's not overwhelming. Before pictures are the best! They help us visualize how we can fix up a space! I love to see the difference.

  10. I love the coral ceiling! I think you just arent supposed to show before pictures first because of snipets on blog rolls or google reader. I love seeing the befores in the post though!

  11. You have to show "before" shots so we know we too can accomplish it!
    Room looks amazing!

  12. Oh Abby, I LOVE it! Coral is a favorite. I read that post, too--from Maria Killiam, right? It's funny, in some rooms it feels tome like you need a before shot to show how far a space has come. In this case, the afters stand on their own. 100%.

  14. I have no idea who the heck thinks that "before" pics are a bad idea, but that is just poppycock! It makes the after so much more dramatic and awesome! And *this* after is so GREAT!!! I'm totally in love with the coral ceiling and combined with the gray it's just fan-freakin'-tastic! You always are full of awesome ideas, girl!!!

  15. The coral walls look fresh and inviting, Abby. It looks beautiful against the white and deep grey.
I like to see the before photos of a room makeover. It's necessary to show the reader how dramatic the transformation really is. The only thing I think a person should avoid is using the 'before' pic as the first image on their post. The thumbnail pic needs to be pretty!
    Have a fantastic day, Abby!

  18. Looks fantastic! I love the coral ceiling and if you have before pics, I love seeing them (many people don't think to snap them before tackling the project). I would love to be a guest in that room!

  19. Scrumptious! Love the bold color with the white linens and black 4 post-er. I am all for before shots, I think it increases the understanding and drama in a re-do.

  20. It looks amazing, Abby! I don't know how you find the time.
Bringing the coral color down from the ceiling is a great way to eliminate having to cut in the wall color.
Does this room have 8ft ceilings? Does the painted ceiling make the room feel taller?
And where did you find the grey studded pillow? So cute!

  23. I love those blue pillows!

And who in the world would advise not to put up "before" picutres? Of course they're ugly! That's what makes the "after" picture even more beautiful!

  27. Great colors. Keep seeing more and more coral. Love the fabric on the pillow.
Ok in response to the "before pictures" - of course they are ugly - that is the point. It is real life and a chance to show people what can be done.

  28. Love the coral, I think it all looks great. And, isn't the point of the before pics to show everyone how bad it looked (no offense) before, so you can show how amazing it looks after? It kind of evens the playing field and let's everyone believe that their guest room can looks this great too!

  29. I think it turned out amazing! I love that you carried the coral up on the ceiling. And the new color of the bed looks stunning! I think showing before pictures is a great idea and inspiring for readers. It lets people see the potential in spaces and what it could be! Keep up the great work. :)

  30. I think showing before pictures helps people appreciate how far the room has come through the design process. I personally like seeing the before photos so thanks for showing them!

  32. Wow! What a difference, I love the coral, so bright and cheery. I think Before pictures are important, it helps reader's truly appreciate the transformation.

  33. Hey Abby, love what you did with the room - love the coral on top! And 11 yrs ago I had coral & hot pink roses for my wedding - so you get my vote! For before pics, absolutely use them otherwise we can't tell what the changes were. Of course, just don't put the before pic as your first pic in the post because that's all we'll see in the blog roll snippets. Hope you feel better soon! Still can't wait to hear more about the hgtv experience.
