thinking of a "big boy room"

I'm feeling the weight of creating a room for my littlest boy.  He's almost two (sob), and asking for a big bed almost daily.  A big boy or big girl room is important because you're trying to combine the present and the future.  My philosophy is to design for a ten year span.  That means nothing too theme-y and keep the big ticket items classic and timeless.  That doesn't mean it can't be fun and have trendy pieces!
 It's all about balance.

If you follow me on Pinterest, you may have seen the board I've been pinning for H.'s big boy room.
I am just piecing it together slowly in my mind while I do other, more important things, like work for clients.  But I've made five decisions to guide the rest of the way.

1) I want this sconce over the bedside table.

 2) I love the color combination of dark blues and yellow.

3) He will have two twin beds with the table in the midle.  The space can handle it, and we need to be able to sleep as many guests as possible when family is in town.

4) I'll be finding headboards on Craig's List and painting them.

5) He needs plenty of accessible storage for books.
All of these images and sources can be found here.

What do you think?  Am I on the right track?

Today I am chiming in with my thoughts on the Tulip Table at Cris Angsten Interiors.  She has a fun series called, "weird things design types love" and you'll have to click here to see what I think.  Thanks Cris, for including me!

  1. I was wondering if you had considered a DIY upholstered headboard?
    1...easier & faster then painting
2...fabric can be changed for a new look
3...softer if he falls while jumping on the bed

  2. Great inspiration shots Abby and yes a pair of twin beds with a table is the perfect arrangement for a big boy room. Not only good for guests, but sleep overs!

  3. Hi Abby,
I love your inspiration photos. It is so hard to find good pictures of boys rooms. I also love the fact that you are thinking of rooms that he can grow into. My 8 year old son's room still looks babyish and I have been stuggling with a way to make it look more mature but not teenager-ish. I love maps too and am heading in the direction of Vintage-Travel-Ralph Lauren-ish. I can't wait to see what you decide!

  12. I love that last image from Elle Decor - I loved that entire home. I really love that sconce that you have your eye on and think the idea of two twin beds is so smart. Your little guy looks older than almost two - he's a handsome one! But loves that paint brush just like his Mom ;)
