before & after the paint: part two

You might not realize how great of an effect color has on your life until you make a change.
After our main living area was painted, my hubby actually said he was starting to get depressed by the old wall color.  I know I was too.  Before we get started with the "progress" shots, let me just plead with you for a minute-- if you are living with colors that don't bring you joy IT'S TIME TO CHANGE THEM.  That was me pleading with you, not yelling. ;-)

Our living room went from a goldish-beige to "Salt Glaze" by Martha Stewart, and "Snow White" by Benjamin Moore.  Here is the shot I shared with you on Friday and I was so thankful for your comments.  I wish you could come over and see it in person.  Not because I think it's the most spectacular room on the planet, but because the change is so dramatic.
Here is how it looked before we started painting.  We had turned the entry white, but hadn't started the hallway yet. {and oh, how I am crazy for our new hallway!}
For an extra treat, here is the room before we moved in.
The is a progress pic taken from in front of the piano.  Notice anything different besides the walls?
Yep, we painted the fireplace white.  When I say "we" I really mean our amazing painter, Mike Bart.  He said I could share his number.  If you are local and need a room painted, he is the best!  (616-581-5840)  He truly works magic with a paint brush.
I know painting brick and painting wood is a hot topic--but you can't deny how much brighter and fresher the room looks with a white fireplace.

Those panels for the slider are going on the garbage truck this morning.  I'm not exactly sure what fabric I'm going to use on the slider, but I use will need to be custom for our 9 1/2 foot ceilings.
The yellow sofa and possibly the brown recliner are headed to our basement.
 Not sure on the timeline for that.

I have the perfect painting (that was over the piano) for the fireplace, but it looks better hanging than leaning so I'll have to share the "styled fireplace" with you a different day.

There you have it!  We've made progress.  Now that we have the room up to baseline with lighting and paint, I can actually start decorating.  Stay tuned for fabric choices and other fine tuning.  Nan asked about my white sofa and how I plan to keep it clean with two boys.  Answer?  It's slipcovered and I can wash it and beach it.    It's the best and was an incredible deal at World Market.
By the way--those stripes in the hallway might be the best part of the house. I can't decide between the stripes, the chandelier (thank you Kara) or the color in our dining room.  So much to love.  So much to be thankful for.  So much work to still accomplish.

  7. Beautiful! I love seeing progress. You're doing so well on your house in just 4-5 months! You've done more than we've done in a year! We've been in our house for a year now and hardly done anything - slow as molasses here.

  13. This is so much like our house it was painted a dreary beige with a yellow tinge and made everything look daggy. We picked out a light grey paint and have almost finished painting the whole house in it and it now looks so fresh and bright and clean now. Painting is the most effective and instant makeover. I love those stripes you can see peeping through the doorway there, love love love the stripes :)
